DERAILED Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 What happened to the Enniscorthy Rockin Food Festival trip? Posts about forthcoming events that ultimately fail to materialise make said posts unreliable. Everybody knows that that steam specials can fail but explanations should follow rather than being glossed over. Quote
snapper Posted August 13, 2019 Author Posted August 13, 2019 Nothing was being glossed over, I post times and details here for anybody who might be interested in seeing the trains or taking photographs. I don’t tend to share post trip reports (which are emailed to RPSI members), but I do answer any questions when asked. Details of what was happening was posted on the RPSI Dublin Facebook page as and when information was available. As for what happened on the day, the steam train did not fail. Quote This train was advertised as the Enniscorthy Rockinfood Festival Express. Dublin Connolly to Enniscorthy and a local trip to Wexford and Rosslare Strand. Both trains were sold out. The carriages selected were BR Van 3173, Cravens Open Standards 1505, 1532, Bar Car 1514, Dining Car 1522, Open 1506, 1541 and 1523. It became apparent that the day ahead was not looking good. Operations Manager began receiving text messages from Irish Rail indicating that there were serious signal problems on the DSER between Grand Canal Dock and Sandymount. There were no trains going passed Pearse Station heading south. The Cravens Carriages were held at Inchicore as Connolly had no room for them. Members of the catering staff were onboard and had the kitchen up and running. Signal problem sorted at around 10am. Carriages arrived with GM. Loco No. 082 onto Platform 5. The Down Rosslare left on time and only got as far as Pearse when the signals failed again. This time it was as far as Dun Laoighre. Steam Loco No. 85 was on the Wash Road waiting for the road to travel over and hook up. Signalman directed that they return to Shed as he needed the Road to store railcars. The Down Rosslare returned to Connolly and passengers were brought to the car park to wait for Bus Transfers. Time was running out for us. If we did not get away immediately, then we would be out of time for the Loco Crew. Operations Manager made the decision to run to Dundalk instead. Announcements were made over the train PA and a number of passengers opted not to travel and registered for refunds. Incidentally, the line opened at 12.30pm. It was too late for the crew. We departed for Dundalk at 12.38pm with 182 passengers. Good running until we got to Malahide where we were informed that there was a points failure. 13.10hrs to 13.34hrs. A DART was in front of us and we also had to wait for an UP Enterprise to proceed. Signals had to be passed at Danger. Skerries passed at 13.47hrs. Laytown 13.56hrs. We arrived into Drogheda at 14.04hrs. Engine watered and we departed at 14.15hrs. We arrived into Dundalk at 14.46hrs. Train was shunted onto the UP Platform where the engine was watered from the Column Tank. We departed Dundalk at 16.00hrs. Drogheda arrived at 16.43hrs. Set Down only, we had been blocked on the northern side of the Viaduct to let the Down Enterprise pass. Malahide passed at 17.07hrs. and we arrived back into Dublin Connolly, Platform 2 at 18.40hrs. The set was transferred back to Inchicore Railway Works by GM 228. The weather was fantastic with the sun shining for most of the day. The views along the coast were magnificent. For the 171 Fund, John Richardson’s Fund Raising; “Every ones a Winner” raised €900.00. John and Gerard Owens sold 54 2020 calendars. 1 1 Quote
DERAILED Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 (edited) @ Snapper - thank you for your speedy response and for clarifying matters. It seems the DSER is bedevilled by problems and only the Belmond seems to get through to Enniscorthy albeit without stopping. Edited August 13, 2019 by DERAILED 2 Quote

Broithe Posted October 5, 2019 Posted October 5, 2019 (edited) 2810 was looking slightly lonely... Some athleticism was displayed by the returning enthusiasts. As I passed the bridge, some effort was made by the Onboard Hospitality Staff to get me to board the train. Nowhere near as much effort as the loco crew put into trying to attract these three, though... And then they were off. With a cheery wave. And then they were gone. snapper Posted March 18, 2020 Author Posted March 18, 2020 Quote Chairman's Message In view of the current concern about the spread of Coronavirus and the directions given both by the UK and Irish Governments, the RPSI has taken a decision to cancel all its trains and events and to close the Whitehead Railway Museum and its Edwardian Tearoom to visitors until further notice. We trust that you will understand this decision and continue to support the Society in the meantime as we, like other charities and businesses, will find this a very challenging time. For those who have booked on the cancelled Dublin trips, refunds will be issued from Eventbrite over the next few days. Those who have booked for the Lough Foyle Railtour will receive a communication shortly. The Chairman and Board are mindful of the pressure that this situation places on all our staff and active volunteers and the management and staff of our partners in Translink and Iarnród Éireann and ask that they be given every encouragement and support as they struggle to cope with an unprecedented crisis. John McKegney Chairman RPS Quote

The day started with 071 on duty arriving into Connolly hauling the Cravens. 081 took over from here, as we headed to Dundalk. It was then back to Connolly, where 071 resumed duties for the trip West to Galway. And finally, back to Dublin. As always, a fantastic day out. Edited April 3, 2022 by JasonB 5 Quote
