Just got an Email from the RPSI Eventbrite account:

Dear Passengers,

We regret to inform you that this Saturday’s upcoming “The Mighty Kingdom” railtour to County Kerry has been cancelled.

Unfortunately, when our operating licence came up for renewal with the Commission for Railway Regulation (CRR), they had received legal advice that our current structure was no longer valid to hold a licence in Ireland. The main issue is Brexit related, as our company is registered in the UK and this is now outside the EU.

Work has been underway since the moment we found out that we have additional legal and Companies Registration Office documents to obtain in order to renew our licence. Despite our very best efforts and matters outside of our control we have not achieved this in time for this Saturday’s tour.

We truly understand the massive disappointment that this news brings you and your fellow participants. We as an organising committee are also very upset at having to cancel this railtour.

Just said I'd throw out a quick question on the off chance somebody "in the know" could help, Has anybody any idea what time "An Sairseal" will be passing Kildare this Saturday? I'm passing through the area and hoping I might get lucky.

I'm just a passenger (hopefully) and haven't yet received confirmed timings. The outline timings are Connolly 0930, Portarlington 1050, so you may be able to interpolate?

Around the 10:30 mark.

For logistical reasons, I was in the bog, just before it crossed into Tipperary, but I did catch it, to some extent.

I will make a better(?) effort on the way back up later.

I caught 171 blasting through Newbridge this evening just minutes before my train to Athlone arrived.

Amazing to see passing by giving it the beans!

How was the tour?

Very good, all ran like clockwork, we were half an hour early into Limerick, and on time back into Dublin. 171 and 088 performed well.

The bar and buffet cars seemed to be doing a good trade.

The weather was dry and mostly sunshine and blue skies.

A most enjoyable trip.

Is it Whitehead that its registered? Its just that, as I'm sure anyone who has tried to buy anything from GB to NI is told it can't be done as we're EU. It seems that we're in the EU when it suits, and UK when it suits.

Think it’s RPSI Dublin that’s now been registered as an entity in Ireland . RPSI is not a registered TOC in NI AFAIK so cannot operate trains. Even if crew could be found.

I'm aware of several smaller Swiss preservation outfits that have recently transitioned from operating under the wing of their host railway, to being a TOC in their own right. There's a lot of work to achieve that, but once the approvals are all in place it makes things easier and less reliant on goodwill.

Having said that. the RPSI have always been very professional - it must have been about 15 years ago when I audited their maintenance policy, practices, and the condition of their locos and rolling stock, and they came out of that very well with only a few minor observations.

RPSI have been a Railway Undertaking in the Republic for many years at this stage (at least since 19 December 2014). Northern operations were under Translink until recently.

Does anyone know if there is a mailing list of some sort that you can sign up to to be informed of upcoming RPSI excursions…? I always seem to catch them once they’re sold out so end up watching lineside (which is just as fun, but a lot more fleeting!)

Had a cursory look on their website and didn’t find anything but just wondering if there’s any tips on how to get in the know!

 Thanks :)
