Sadly, with the useless politicians we have there's no chance. With the stroke of a pen Varadkar and Deenihan could put this thing in motion in the morning. murrayec Posted June 16, 2014 Share Posted June 16, 2014 Hi All It's far more realistic and achievable to initially research/campaign the existing building/system option. This could involve IR property but as pointed out above any works areas are out due to complexities mentioned- to try and negotiate with them would be a nightmare. I do reckon IR should be approached, after a strategy is in place, to discuss options that may be available and campaign for support. Not just IR, there are a few others that could be approached also- including Local Authority's. But first things first;- We have to see can we put our voice on the custodians to do something about the situation and get acceptance as a concerned group, with ideas on this matter and willing to try and assist in getting the Models back into public view. With the options available to us regarding Myles Tierney's support for the Fry Models I reckon we should proceed as per his posts above, get the group together and set about getting support, and approach the owners for discussion. On contacts for existing public access systems- we need contacts! I have one or two, but we need to think about who we know and can we contact them when the time comes, to see if they have an interest in assisting. If they (DLH) were still interested I'd like to know what objections would be made to a temporary exhibition as being any worse that hiding it away from a willing and interested public? Pop young Fiacla (who likes his Thomas the tank engine) in the pram and down for a coffee while it occupies him for a bit. A bit of commercial income without depending on us rivet counters to turn up ad infinitum. Bobby Kerr, I've no doubt, would bite your hand off for a few square feet of coffee selling space in that environment. Worth emailing him for his honest "cost benefit analysis" thoughts on it? murrayec Posted June 17, 2014 Share Posted June 17, 2014 Hi All Regarding St Michaels Wharf, Dun Laoghaire; I don't have the full storey but I know some;- The Harbour Authority run St Michaels Wharf for the ferry business, there is a possibility that the ferry could cease docking at Dun Laoghaire and the Authority have muted a future apartment development for the Wharf as an alternative income. I dealt with the Harbour Authority on the Carlisle Pier and their only interest in developing that pier was apartments, nothing else. Also look at what they did- mashed up the long standing railway shed of cast iron columns and wroth iron roof truss structure, it was erected in the 1800's and was part of our railway heritage- scrapped. The Shecklton expo has use of the St Michaels Wharf facility for 2 years only. Any deal that could be done with the Harbour Authority would only be temporary if its based on space in St Michaels Wharf. And the stay could be very short time! Due to its exposed nature and facing North getting down Marine Road can be quite difficult. Noel Posted September 30, 2014 Share Posted September 30, 2014 Just catching up on some old treads including this one on the Fry collection. Really glad to hear it will reopen next year. It was about 6 years ago I took my Son to see it in Malahide. That was were I first came across Murphy Models 141/181 class in the little shop they had there. Even though my hobby had been dormant for nearly 12 years I had to buy a 181 on the spot and only unboxed it two months ago when it revitalised my interest in the hobby and stirred me to restart work on our old new layout! Tara's palace 'dolls house' collection which was also hosted at Malahide castle found a new home at Powerscourt in Enniskerry. There was a brief possibility the Fry collection might have found a new home there too but it didn't work out. Malahide seems its natural home. I guess they may take the opportunity to adjust and update the layout to suit the space available in the new venue. It is really positive to hear they are planning to reopen next year. Dave Posted November 10, 2014 Share Posted November 10, 2014 This popped up on the MRSI Facebook page today Update on Fry Model Railway and The Casino Malahide A Chara, As you will know myself and my colleague Cllr Eoghan O'Brien have been working with dedicated members of our community to secure the Fry Model Railway in The Casino House, Malahide. Due to the very generous bequeath by Mr. Micheál Gaffney ( RIP), The Casino House, will be brought back to its former glory, which will then house the Fry Model Railway. Some outstanding legal issues are close to resolution. I am very hopeful that in the coming weeks all will be finalised. By way of an update, please see below the response to the formal question tabled at yesterday's area committee meeting. I will keep you informed of progress. The issue of the location at the “Casino” in Malahide of the model seems to have been finalised. 2. Outstanding legal and other matters regarding the model have been resolved apparently. 3. The planning of a new building (5,000sqft) on the site to house a layout is under-way. It has been suggested that consultation and input from committed railway modellers would be welcomed regarding the actual layout and generally. Now would be a good time to contact your local councillors [if you live in Fingal] to press for this consultation.
