Latest developments in Co. Louth…..

The derelict office has now been bedded in with foliage:

And I’m not sure about this one but I have had an old Ratio crane in the ‘to make’ box for a few years thinking it would find a place at Brookhall Mill but it never did  so I fired it together for Clogherhead.  The idea is that the GN experimented with specially constructed containers for easier loading and unloading of the sand but the system didn’t work….. not sure it looks right but maybe it’ll grow on me!  It has been suitably rusted of course!

That loading bank could even be used to load beet. Several GNR locations such as Navan, Malahide and a couple of other places between Amiens St and Dundalk were loading beet in a few cases into the 1970s.

A Dundalk-Tuam Beet special operated up to the closure of the Tuam factory at the end of the 84/85 Campaign, Navan would have been served by a trip working to and from Drogheda. I was stopped by a very long Tuam-Dundalk empty special at Coolmine Level Crossing on my way home from work one Autumn evening in 84.

Its possible Clogherhead might have loaded 2-3 wagons daily by a trip working from Drogheda in a similar manner to Fenit in its final years.  In later years beet was usually unloaded directly by tipper lorry to the wagons from a raised section of the loading bank. Trucks would have been a mixture of Ford, Bedford and Dodge SWB 2 axle tippers with high wooden body owned by local hauliers rather than 'company' vehicles.

There is a 1950s photo of beet being tipped into wagons at Tullamore in the O'Dea National Library collection

Stacks of fun on the Clogherhead workbench this evening. Chimneys aren't my favourite thing to make because I invariably leave them to the end and then get really frustrated because they hold up the completion of the build, so this time I'm making them early on in the build.  They are for the Clogherhead station building.

Looking good - how has the brickwork been created/coloured?

Thanks David

Embossed plasticard painted with Burnt Sienna acrylic then DAS clay applied for the pointing.

The chimney pots are white metal castings.

Further progress this evening.  The side with the glazed panel is the platform side and the panel itself will have a canopy above it.  The forecourt side will have a smaller canopy above the door.  I am also currently thinking how the internal layout will be arranged and also considering having part of the building derelict, in keeping with the overall theme of the layout.

I wasn't happy with the dimensions of the station building so I trimmed these a bit and removed two windows from the forecourt wall, which brings it in line with Dunleer.  Much happier with the proportions now.

Brickwork underway for Clogherhead station building. The GNR didn’t make it easy for future modellers, with their decorative brick arches, but I’m trying something new this time which might make it a bit easier…… or not……

Here we are at the close of business today, a rough idea of what the building will look like, it’s just loosely Sellotaped together with a makeshift roof.  There will be a large canopy on this (platform) side and a smaller one on the other side, above the forecourt door.

Now THAT is a work of art!!!

How did you do the criss-cross timberwork in the middle section?

Thanks JB! It was just achieved using lots of plasticard strips, time-consuming, but definitely worth it!!

A bit of work was done today on the window arches. I had these laser cut a while back, in thick card, and they do make the job a good bit easier.  Window sills next then window frames.

Not all the windows will be arched though as some will be boarded over.

More work on decorating the walls of the station building today - the wooden glazed panel has been given a coat of CIÉ 1960s green (thanks @jhb171achill!), window sills have been added and the polychromatic brickwork has been tidied up.  Next it'll be the window frames, then the walls can be assembled.

The layout is out of this world, and the wagons and bus look right at home there!

Any joy finding that Base Toys Leyland Comet that @Westcorkrailway saw?

Very kind comments, thank you DJ!

I checked every stand, it must’ve been snapped up or maybe I just missed it! Happy with the bus in the meantime! Great show all together 😊

To be honest when I saw that lorry I was going to buy it on behalf of @Patrick Davey it only cost a few euro after all. But I was under the impression that he was there on the Saturday. Lesson learned for next time!

Two of @leslie10646’s fantastic new cement vans looking right at home at Clogherhead, along with a CIÉ bus. Loved the show at Blackrock today - well done to all involved 👏

I’m in love with my van. I mean seriously there is nothing you can buy for 20 quid anymore. I’d be suprised if many of the broken wheel ones are left .

Yep, Patrick (Good to see you yesterday) the wagons look at home there.

WCR, glad you liked the wee van. The Broken Wheel sold out early yesterday. When Paddy M came, I had to dip into the reserve (Family / people I'd forgotten .....) - but who wouldn't oblige a gentleman who has MADE the Irish hobby?

Down to last half dozen snails.

If there's the demand (Speak up!), another Wheel with a different number will follow. I like the two colour Broken Wheel (which Claire in The Studio at Dapol got so nicely), so I won't need too much persuading.

Also an a Bauxite body / roof version when I dig out the photos.
