Todays item is set # L149801-2

If I had been able to supply the amount of these sets I had been asked for I would be a wealthy man.

Again this set was produced in 1998 and only 300 sets made

3 X Mk 3 coaches. 7135, 7141 & 7165

Would a set of those mk3s and the mk3 restaurant car be for sale at bangor?

Personally would love to pair it with silverfox push-pull

I remember the Modeller's Den off Aston Quay. It was a Post Office also I think. I bought a few Tamiya models from him back in the day. Unfortunately, he's long gone.

Yes I bought some stuff these too. Even places like ELTOY and BANBA had some train stuff. Think Marks Models is about the only one now.

Was there a Murphy Models place somewhere about Aungier Street?

The dealer selling them told me one of those went for €1500

he showed me a screenshot @WRENNEIRE posted abt it

I can’t seem to find the post but I’m delighted anyway and I hope to buy a silver fox push pull and make my own mk3 gen van in the mean till I’ll use my mk2d gen van

I noticed in the last photo the coaches had different tints of orange likely from sun exposure or from warm lamps

Good luck with them, they're a nice set . As well as the push-pull driving trailer, you can also get a Mk3 generator van from Silverfox (ready to run or kit form). SSM also do an etch that allows you to convert a Mk 3 coach to a generator van.

Good question

So in the 3 standard set there is 7135,7156 and 7141

with the 201, there 7129, 7151 and the restaurant car is 7411

I’ll be getting ready run from silver fox and I’ll find a realistic but cheap mk3 gen van as no point splashing money on something I’ll be painting

Will check my running numbers when home. Pretty sure that one pack has s more yellow shade of orange and one has a more red shade of orange, from the factory. Don’t think there were mixed shades in the same pack.

Hi Josh, something you may wish to consider.  To my recollection the Mk 3 coaches used on the outer suburban push pull services in Dublin, did not have sealed window units as per these Lima models. These push pull trains didn't run with generator vans and depended on a smaller generator in the driving trailer (underfloor) and accordingly did not have air conditioning. These trains were also operated at least initially with 121 class locos.

In later years-IE modified three EGVs to work the push pull coaches in a locomotive hauled formation.

7135, 7141 and 7165 from the L149801-2  pack should have a more red shade of orange.

7129, 7151 and 7411 should have a more yellow shade of orange.

EDIT: 7135 and 7141 also came in a pack with Mk2D no. 5228, and the two Mk3's in this pack had a more brown shade of orange. The toilet windows were not painted white on these two, but they were in the other packs.

Suburban Mk3 coaches have different windows to Mainline Mk3 coaches.

Suburban Mk3 coaches ran with the Mk3 DVT and a 121 / 01.

Mainline Mk3 coaches ran with an EGV, no DVT.

Did they have little drivers cabs at one end?

With my pedantic head on...

Suburban push-pull coaches didn't say Intercity on the side, well not in their earlier years at least.

The unique buffet car 6402 had all sealed windows but could run in Mk3 push-pull sets, it was on the Waterford link for a while.

I thought the three Mk3 EGVs were converted for the Enterprise rather than the regular suburban push-pulls.

I’m quite sure that somebody posted photos or videos of the Suburban Mk3’s with Intercity branding in their later years.

@hexagon789 posted info on some crazy Suburban / Intercity Mk3 consists a few years back.

No need in a locomotive hauled formation.

I think you're referring to Mk3 generator vans added the De Dietrich Enterprise formation to replace the locomotive HEP. Technically they're push-pulls too of course, but the lads were talking about the Mk 3 push-pull sets. I'm open to correction, but I don't recall Mk3 generator vans being added to the Mk 3 push-pull sets.

They operated and I worked the sets on the Westport route when they covered for the standard Mk3 sets around 2005/2006

Operating instructions regarding MK3 hauled push pull rolling stock notice from 2005….

Interesting - many thanks, I never knew that.
Was this to enable a longer train beyond the capacity of the small generator in the driving car?
Or was the driving car omitted entirely?

What was the maximum speed for such a train? I recall the push-pulls had a lower speed limit perhaps owing to the different bogies on most of the driving cars?

Maximum train consist was six-five MK3 push pull coaches and the EGV,

The control car/DVT wasn’t part of the formation,

Maximum  speed was 90 mph-see above photo, bottom of the notice.

As push pulls in suburban service I believe the speed limit was 70 mph. When displaced and used more widely with upgraded bogies as push pulls the speed limit was 90 mph hauled and 70 mph pushed.  Maximum number of coaches in push pull formation was six, probably capped by generator capacity.

I was previously unaware that the MK3 push pull coaches with the hopper windows were later used as hauled stock with a generator van.  It means all the more possibilities for use of the long promised Murphy Models release of these coaches.

I'll have to have another look through my own photos at some stage. I'm sure I've got a photo of a 201 with a longish train of Mk3 push-pull coaches somewhere between Cork and Mallow. I remember a set was regular on the Dublin-Waterford route for a while, and of course there was the short Limerick set.

Jeepers Dave. That advert from The Hobby Horse in Rathfarnham shopping centre took me back. Fabulous Shop. Sold Hornby, Peco and Wrenn. Had multiple display layouts in the store and one above shelf height that was always running.
