Hi Dave. I have one of those awful CIE hymeks and the pair of the hornby CIE mk2a coaches that came with it. The two coaches are about to become donors for respraying/weathering training (i.e. not risking my MM mk2's). The Lima CIE class 33 which was released within a few years of the Hornby set was a far superior model and at least painted a sensible colour instead of the garish "ice pop" orange plastic used on the hornby's. The CIE roundel logo is a piece of sticky paper stuck on like a price label. Can't believe many would pay €245 for such toy rubbish.

You have hit the nail squarely on the head Noel. The Hornby, and to a lesser extent the Lima Irish liveried locos and coaches were aimed at the toy market, and not the serious modeller. Jouef also, but less successfully, produced Irish liveried locos and coaches aimed at the toy market. http://www.freewebs.com/jouefhdi/ As is the way of the world, collectors will pay what we modellers would consider ridiculous amounts for such low production run toys.

The joys of Parcel Motel for those situations.

If you are intending to bid pm the seller offering to pay postage before the auction ends as you may be refused bidding automatically otherwise

With the exchange rate and postage costs, it's unlikely that this loco will end up costing anything less than the €135 it can be bought for in Marks Models at the moment.

Bloody hell, I was so wrong, not only did I put my earlier post on this item in the wrong reply, (sorry DV ) but I'm shocked to see that sold, & not only sold but for a small fortune, always said Ireland is loaded, with fool's & money

DC, I thought that auction was World Wide, as for the foolish Irish, well maybe only half of them, the other half are not in Ireland,:ROFL:

If you look under the postage section on the eBay auction, it will specifically state where the seller will ship to and where not, in this case most European countries, but not North America etc, Shock! collectible horrors, I couldn't bid

Annoyingly for many modelers on this site, UK sellers will often only post to the UK, OR….. state in the description that they will ship to "Southern Ireland" (wherever that is) but do not select Ireland as a destination. Hence, anyone displaying an address not in the UK will often be prevented from physically placing a bid by eBay. I think Blaine pointed this out above.

Parcel Motel can be used as a workaround, of course

Two guys bid up to GBP92 for this Intercity 201 with a missing original grey coupling and broken drivers steps, when they are at Marks Models for the equivalent of GBP99!=))

In all fairness, the bidders probably did not know of the Sale at Marks Models. After all, many folk on this forum only became aware of the Sale when someone mentioned it here!

Now that you mention it, I used to get update emails from marks models but I don't seem to get them any more. Did they stop or is it just me?

I still get them, but they are not as frequent as they used to be. I had one on March 24th.

I have found, though not with Marks, that some genuine stuff ends up in Spam these days - it's worth looking in there every week or so, mine deletes stuff that's been in there for 30 days..

People get into a frenzy when bidding on eBay and lose focus on what the item is actually worth.

Yup, it's a gambling-like buzz.

To be honest, ebay no longer provides the bargains that it used to 10 years ago.

You're quite likely to be caught for VAT and excise on anything worth over €150 imported from outside Europe, negating any saving.

A lot is on sale as buy it now, and prices are higher to accomodate the 20-25% transaction costs of ebay+ paypal.

I stopped selling on ebay 7 years ago because of this.

There are also other alternatives like Done-deal, Buy and sell and specialist auction houses, as well as the fact that most shops have some form of an online presence now, and have asjusted their pricing to compete with ebay.

However it is still the place for the stuff that just can't easily be found elsewhere, particularly electronics and spares.

True. World and his mother know all about it now.

Add to that the sterling rate and Irish based sellers flogging stuff in sterling as main currency rather than Euro. Sneaky humongous postage charges for quite small things etc.

The sterling prices for 'buy now' Irish items are way above RRP anyway, add to that the GBP/Euro exchange rate and little will sell except to gullible fools.

I've just received one today.

I've bought bargains on eBay myself, but some of the garbage offered by others for sake makes you think they are either seriously deluded or they've got a cheek!

As long as people keep buying it more will keep appearing, I remember back when the lima 201s were at their peak on ebay you saw all sorts of crap with "Irish Railways" in the title trying to get people interested.

Hi Guys,

Just a note regarding our Email Newsletters. This year we have changed our service provider for this in an effort to solve the problems of some people not receiving them or emails being placed in spam or Junk. Please check your various email boxes and move to your inbox etc. We are now trying to send emails every 2 to 4 weeks. But we only want to send them out when we have something to talk about. If you cannot find any Newsletters from us please re register on the website. Also keep liking our Facebook page if you are an FB'r and you should get updates this way, but the problem with Facebook is that even if you like our page you will not necessarily see everything we post, regular interaction does help this though.

Good advice - it's not just you - I've had problems with sources that I regularly correspond with and stuff still gets "Spammed" - and, as you say, items that that might expect in the Inbox can be in Social, Promotions, or wherever.

Check the Spam every week - that's my advice.

I've had no problems with yours (as far as I know, of course).

A friend of mine got a letter the other day from his electricity supplier asking if they had his correct address - if it was correct, he was to do nothing, but if it was wrong, they asked him to correct it - I don't think they had thought that through....
