Agreed! Can't see from the photos ( and maybe it doesn't work as well in 4mm as 7mm), but a trick I learned from Gordon Gravett's is to file a 'flat' on each tyre where it touches the ground. Imitates the real thing and just helps the model sit better, giving it a bit of mass.

I've always fancied the idea of having a cement silo similar to the examples seen in both Tullamore and Waterford but could never seem to find a tube that was just right for the job. Then by chance I came across this...

So this morning armed with the essential mug of tea in hand plus some photos to work off, I headed out to the bench to give it a go.

I started by taking the measurements of each section of the silo, and then went about transferring these from the photos to the tube but in larger scale. Eventually, after a few alterations here and there I had something that I was happy with the look of. Markings now done I began cutting away the excess from the bottom of the tube to lower its overall height, and once this was removed it was on to cutting out the entrance/exit. Any rough edges were then give a light sanding just to tidy everything up.

Plenty of work still to be done but I'm happy with that start.

Fantastic couple of shots Ernie. In particular the one from Waterford. I've never seen a view of the silo from that side, any photos I have were all taken looking from the opposite direction. Thanks for posting.

Managed to make a little more progress on the silo over the past week or so. First job to be tackled was sorting a base to form the roof area. For this I decided to use some foam packing. Simple enough process involved...

The foam was cut to shape and the sides covered in pva glue. It was then pushed up through the tube, and once set I covered it in plasticard. What I was left with was a lightweight but solid base to build on.

Next it was on to the outer wall

And then the inner wall at the top

Horizontal and vertical detailing now added. As always, time is the enemy. But things are beginning to take shape nicely.

This afternoon was spent measuring and cutting out each section for what will eventually form the small corrugated structure that sits on top of the silo.

To help keep everything straight I've used an old platelayers hut which I will glue the four sides to. But that's a job for another day.

Still haven't made up my mind as to how this will look when finished. Quite like the used, slightly industrial look of Tullamore. But I'm leaning towards Waterford West, with it's Irish Cement logo.

The corrugated building and it's base is almost complete. I've a little more detail to add before I finally fix in place and paint.

Just about to make a start on the guard rail from the bits and bobs below, and I've also some more tidying up to do on the Silo itself.

Last of the detail has now been added, and I've primed for painting. Guard rail is also finished, and is ready to be fixed in place.

The prototype isn't exactly picturesque, but it is becoming a very nice model that is full of character.

Evening all, 

Very little work to report on from the bench of late. I really must put that right over the coming months. 

Anyway, to try get the ball rolling again, I made a long overdue return to the silo during the week. And after a couple of hours work, it's now at the stage where it's ready for painting. 

I'm also considering mounting an LED just inside the entrance to replicate the dimly lit interior which I've noticed from various photos. Although thinking about it, it's probably not worth the hassle for such a minor detail.

Thanks for the positive feedback. To answer your question regarding the Ammonia and Barrier wagons. Unfortunately they haven't progressed any further since the last post, spare time for modelling has been hard to come by since the start of the year. They are currently sitting on the bench along with my IRM cement bubbles. The Ammonias are a personal favourite of mine, so I'm itching to see them finished myself

I'll bring what's been a very quiet year on the bench to a close, with a few shots of my Silo. 

The majority of work is now completed, with just a couple of tweaks needed here and there. But for now, it will do as it is.

Lovely work Jason,.the silo is fantastic and the subtle weathering really sets it of great work. Now on to your containers, that has to be some of the most realistic weathering I have ever seen, they are excellent. Very refreshing thread I must say.

I pass Sallypark (Waterford West) every week and so I see the cement silo regularly. That model has such a look of familiarity that it is uncanny. To say that it is a great piece of modelling doesn't give Jason enough credit for the effort,  skill, patience, and commitment in building it.
