Noel Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 (edited) To respray or not to respray? I have this 071 a number of years in the hideous but short lived black and silver IE livery. I am considering respraying it in the newer freight grey livery like 078 in the lower photo. What do folks think, should I keep it as it is as an oddity or respray it into current freight grey livery which I rather like? There is another option which is to weather this ugly livery which may make the loco look more attractive. I have enough rust colours! 078 in grey livery Edited November 17, 2020 by Noel 2 Quote
DJ Dangerous Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 Show off those weathering skills and give it a heavy dose of rust, soot and grime! Quote
WRENNEIRE Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 Weather it like this one from Flying Scotsman of this parish Or if you Greyify it dont forget to remove the grabrails 6 Quote
jhb171achill Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 Personally, I think the silver, black and yellow was unattractive, but the grey isn’t the brightest either! I think for those locos - tippex livery is the nicest. But it’s your loco! 3 Quote
murphaph Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 I quite like the silver cab livery but it's a bit late for my chosen era so I don't have any of them. I would point out that whilst it may be "straightforward" (for someone with Noel's skills) to go grey, it would be much more difficult to revert the loco to the silver and black livery to the same standard as the factory finish. I'd weather it. Looks pretty cool weathered in those pics. 1 Quote
DJ Dangerous Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 I'd love to see a black 071 with orange trim... I like the silver and black, though. Not quite as nice as the grey, nor the IE orange, but still a nice livery. Quote

Its a few years back but I remember nearly falling off a chair when I first saw this loco done by A. 1 Quote
Georgeconna Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 If you are doing the Grey one make sure to take all the printed markings off as the raised edges will show through the paint. Don't recall the S&B ones going that manky really. You could go a bit gentler! 7 Quote
popeye Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 I think it would look better if it was weathered. You have a grey one and lots of B & T so it might be better to keep that livery for a bit of variety. your call. 3 Quote
DJ Dangerous Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 She'll look great weathered with 12 Spoil wagons behind her. Quote
burnthebox Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 Noel, I’m with Popeye on this one, what I’m really suggesting is that you might, down the road, ( Railway Lines ) you might want to show something of that era, & I do like the Black & Silver, & yes I’d weather it like the one above, but as said it’s your call, BTB 2 Quote
Warbonnet Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Could always do the likes of 072, IE orange and black cab doors, grey patch on the front, missing IE logo and generally manky 9 Quote

Dempsey Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Not a fan of the silver and black myself but that being said the model you've shown looks very good weathered. 1 Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Thanks guys it’s always appreciated when my weathering gets such great comments. Noel can’t wait to see the weathering job you do on this. You have to be one of the best around now at weathering. Keep up the great work. 3 Quote

Towards the end of this livery period, before they were taken in and given a decent BODYWORK makeover as well as the grey paint, some were in an awful state - either like this or rusted and filthy. 1 Quote

fishplate7 Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 (edited) I was never a fan of the black & silver in reality Noel! That said, the livery in model form does grow on you and it is, after all, part of the livery history of the 071's. So on that basis I would keep it as it is in silver & black, and give it the weathering it deserves, which you are more than capable doing! Have a look at a video I posted on YouTube some time ago. From 3.55 on you'll get a good idea of the condition of the loco up close and who is winning the war on rust!! Looking forward to seeing the result!
