A multi purpose Railway Crane a complete reversal from IE recent practice of hiring mobile cranes for recovery and Hi-Rail excavators for p.w. work.

All depends on the work intended - will out lift an excavator and quicker onsite than a mobile crane. Big Mobiles often need a space cleared/created whereas this one can use the existing rails. All depends on the job naturally. This has been bought for civil engineering work, unlikely it will be used in a re-railing operation

A lot of OHLE masts and subtstation equipment to go up in the next few years.. Like you said, this will have better access than a road crane

Interesting to see the different gauge tracks together. I hope they did realise that this goes on the 5'3" and not the 4'81/2"  rails...

Its an off the shelf product ultimately, look closely to see the 5'6 rail too, although it could also be Iberian Gauge

An impressive looking thing, even if I would never even begin to understand what all the buttons or for, or the numerous signs and labels. It seems, from the narrative above, that IE staff will not operate this thing at all, but instead a team of people employed by a specially set-up Irish subsidiary of the makers - is that right?

Seems over-the-top in  terms of administration - and somebody's company CEO salary and dividends.

Could this be like the creeping and insidious "privatisation" of the British NHS by introducing more and more "private contractors" and "specialist firms", and "partners"?

Just a thought.

On a completely different note, any time I see the latest thing that maintenance and PW people are getting, I wonder what my father, a lifelong PW Civil Engineer, would have made of it! Old-school as he was in many ways, he was always keen to embrace new tech, and was pleased to be one of the first to get hold of the GNR's first ever tamper, which he deployed between Dundalk and Inniskeen before the GNR's Eastern District snaffled it........

It looks like IE have contracted out track maintenance to Rhomberg Sersa Group possibly a "partnership' agreement. Possibly IE staff transferred to the new undertaking similar to what happened in the UK during the 1990s.

Seems to be a multinational track/infrastructure maintenance company https://www.rhomberg-sersa.com/en that operates in Europe, the UK and Australia.

IE have contracted out the maintenance and operation of the OTM fleet for about 15 years now.. Rhomberg Sersa are just the latest incumbent, I think they won the tender about 3 years ago now..

It was originally operated by Lloyd rail for about 9-10 years

Not sure how to react to the news that Iarnrod Eireann have out-sourced the maintenance of way (wasn't aware of this until now). Might start to see either the 071s or 201s starting to appear displaying the Rhomberg Sersa livery - interesting times, indeed.

It isn't the maintenance of way, its operation and maintenance of the OTM machinery.. Has been this way for about 15 years now, but fairly sure the equipment still carries IE logos as they are still owned by IE..

Perhaps a new model for IRM….😜

You have got to be kidding me, Noel! it's barely been commissioned and so much other stuff to do.

There's the MV Hibernia and a lineside model of Carlisle pier first surely!

Sure, you'll have no room for it on Tara Junction anyway😁

After 20 months in Portlaoise waiting on the pen pushers to do their thing, the Kirow has been unleashed to the wilds today! Doing a tour of the network this week(likely for gauging purposes)

There's been overnight training and trials too, just because nobody sees it doesn't mean nothing has happened.
