Mine arrived pm today, including 10 lighting packs. I then decided to go for DCC control on lights and found Hattons DCR 18 pin 4 function decoders on TMC website @£10.84 per decoder reduced from £17.

Easy to sort address for 4 Dark green set + full brake, I will have to wait on arrival of Park Royals to sort addresses for BnT & Light green full brakes as my Cravens don’t have lighting fitted.

Hi Fowler

Check these guys out if you want to find a kit to fit your Cravens coaches they may be able to help

Regards

Colin Rainsbury

Thanks Colin, I managed to source Train Tech coach lighting kits (on Noel’s recommendation) from TMC @reduced price. DCC Concepts only do table lamps from what I could see.

What would you run the b'n't coach with? Craven's?

Not any of the other dark or light green 6 wheelers I presume?

One featured on the 1964 Grand Steam Tour of Ireland with laminates and J15s, well worth watching this video incidentally:

Some may not have been lit at all.....

Oil lit with Colza (vegetable) oil before petroleum industry kicked off, a very poor, smoky light.

Since these are modelled without the old oil lighting "pots" on the roof, they're either supposed to be gas or more likely electrically lit from battery charged by an axle run dynamo.

Checked my Hatton's pre-orders against my Rails invoice today, and I'm also missing an orange an black coach.

Emailed Rails to query and they said:

"Hello,

Unfortunately the orders have been invoiced as placed with Hattons, unfortunately I am unable to add items as I am unable to edit, these have been imported from Hattons and we can't see any further information unfortunately.

KInd regards"

I gave them my Hatton's order number in my mail, and offered to forward my Hatton's confirmation email to them, but it seems that their hands are tied.

So, does that mean you’ve paid for something that’s not been delivered? They’re clearly unconcerned about two versions of your order, one you got from Hattons and one Hattons sent them.

Mine are due for delivery tomorrow….. I ordered the four pack of dark green vehicles and will be particularly interested to see how these match with A46.  I know there was a great variety of shades of the same colour due to age, weathering and various other factors, but it would be nice if they were pretty close!  Black & tan full brake coming too, if it hasn’t disappeared….

Such an incredible video, not bad quality for the age and lots of interesting locations to be seen, including Newry & Ardee on the GN and Barnagh on the North Kerry.   Many more too!

Would one of our 3d specialists run off a few open top ones?

What they missed out on were the grey painted Per Way Dept ones that might have limped on into the 70s.

I've seen British ones on ebay, 3 of em for over 1000 pound. Looks reasonable in comparison!

I always thought those converted turf wagons looked ridiculous. Riding in style for the turf though!

Reminds me of the Irish Railways in the 40s and 50s dvd

Ferris compares the "sublime Compound" departing Drogheda to the "faintly ridiculous railbus" waiting in the bay.

What did the poor railbus ever do to him 😄

The turf wagons, to be fair, were functional and hastily assembled in a time of exceptional austerity. I agree with you about the railbus; odd though it might look to some, there were a sufficient number of them in Ireland to warrant a degree of normality in Ireland. To my eyes, the only "ridiculous" looking things that ever ran on rails here were the Achill railbus and the unwieldy garden shed contraption on wheels that the Castlederg & Victoria Bridge line used as a "railcar"!

Correct.

Six wheeled coaching stock by 1963 were confined to spare stock in Cork, and one or two branch lines. The very last of the passenger-carrying ones were withdrawn in March 1963 from traffic.

While the black'n'tan livery had just been introduced months earlier, only a handful of newer stock, like Park Royals and laminates, were in BnT. Not one single six wheeld passenger vehicle was ever thus painted, which is why only the full van is offered in this livery. Even at that, only three six-wheeled full passenger vans that are known of, received this livery. They were numbers 69, 79 and 10xx (xx = I forget). All three were ex-GSWR.

This trio and two or three others survived the extinction of all other six-wheelers in 1963, although the three others, being withdrawn by 1965, may actually no longer have been in use.

So CIE knew there would never have been any point in repainting anything at all on six wheels bar the three vans, the last of which was only withdrawn in 1970. The last record I can find of any of these three being actually used is 1968, by which time they appear to have spent their time on the Galway mail trains, alongside a motley collection of tin vans, GSWR full brakes, Bredins and Laminates. All in BnT.

The van on the 1964 tour was 10xx. No. 79 was scrapped about 1970. 69 is at Downpatrick being rebuilt as a brake first.

When the six-wheel vans received BnT, all other six-wheelers were withdrawn, so no BnT ones ever went with any green six wheelers at all. The solitary instance, lasting only a few months, of a BnT six-wheel van working with steam, was on the Ballinrobe branch in its last months, when one of these three ran with a green BOGIE coach (a 1920s GSWR composite).

If we model a Galway line mail train, it is at least hypothetically possible that between 1964 and 1968 a BnT 6W van coukld have ruin with Cravens, only in their original livery; alongside laminates, bredins and Park Royals, and even the occasional old wooden (GSWR) bogie.

Rails are taking their time dispatching my order. Paid at 2pm on Saturday and still showing as unfulfilled.

I questioned mine too - paid a week before it arrived, despite choosing 24-hour tracked shipping.  I sent a polite email asking about this and I received a polite response saying that they were dealing with 9000 orders for all the last Hatton’s Genesis products.  Fair enough I guess 😳

Thanks for all this info Jhb. As a follow on question:

I am planning on running this b'n't 6 wheel brake van at the end of a train of b'n't MM cravens and b'n't IRM Park Royals pulled by a silver or b'n't CIE roundel diesel A class. Sometimes also pulled but a IR livery 121. Would this be close enough to prototypical?

And as my layout is a dead end branch line, once the loco does a run around to the other end of the carriages for the return journey should the 6 wheel brake be run around to the new back end of the train as well?

Many thanks
