BosKonay
Couple of quick shots showing how things lay. Needs finishing and some sanding still.
RedRich
Excellent Stephen, I love the potholes in the hard standing. I wouldn't do too much sanding as it has that broken edge look in the last photo that is so normal to see around yards. I like the placement of the buildings, especially the half relief building behind the wall. Richie's water tower looks sweet. It's a great thread to follow for anyone wanting to get inspired. BosKonay
Thanks Rich, I've a lot of grubbying up to do, weeds to plant, etc, and have plans to build a back row of half relief stuff over the wall too... The water tower sets off the corner and the main Shed will be installed just to the right of the three sidings in the second photo.. Goal is something akin to http://eiretrains.com/Photo_Gallery/Railway%20Stations%20N/North%20Wall/IrishRailwayStations.html#NorthWall_20100820_008_CC_JA.jpg Edited December 10, 2013 by BosKonay
Kirley
Great to see progress on this layout. The tile grout looks very effective.
Aussie Phil
Layout looks great. Love the effect on the concrete. Would be a great way to do a road as well... Might have to steal the technique for my own layout.
Dave
Looks great Stephen, I would leave the hard standing as is. I love the rough edges and the way the ballast is heaped around the buffer stop. Plenty of weeds and some puddles would finish it off nicely. BosKonay
Thanks guys, i'm thinking some small puddles with drops of varnish in the cracks, and am going to try the CD cover trick from a recent BRM mag for a large puddle nearer the shed! BosKonay
Great to see progress on this layout. The tile grout looks very effective. I'm delighted with it, I did a section in woodlands smooth it, which looked great too, but a tub of grout from woodies is pre-mixed, cheap, and comes in white, cream, grey and black off the shelf. Dave
How did you make the groove for the wheel flanges in the grout, cut them with a dremel after it went off?
BosKonay
I used a wallpaper scraper and small trowel to level off the grout, and just ran the trowel edge down the semi-set grout. When very nearly set, i ran a small screwdriver along the rail side then ran an old wagon with deep flanges down just to be sure I've actually very pleased with how well the grooves came out

Train model
It reminds me of when I was young and kicking a ball on a roof near my house just to hear the rattle,if I kicked too hard it went over and if I got it just right the neighbours would eat the crap out of me.And the famous one liner I'll call the guards,so stick a ball on the gutter for me

Dave
Lighting looks great, nice and bright. Can you dim it?
BosKonay
Yes, I've it on a remote control and have a built in dimmer circuit. The goal was to deliver full-on daylight - which it certainly does

BosKonay
Got the concrete slab finished under the running shed And started remodeling the dmu stabling sidings
UP6936
I like the concrete slab. You should weather it up and maybe do a few oil stains?
enniscorthyman
Lovely hurling there Stephen, and lights are a nice job. When You think of it,proper lighting can make all the difference.
BosKonay
Cheers lads. Yep I plan to paint and weather the slab. Once settled into the ballast will help too. I'm loving the lights. It was well enough lit but a bit dim up there. Now I can see what I'm doing! Is highly recommend the LEDs.
BosKonay
The new DMU stabling area mockup... Still not sure.
Sulzer201
Looks great, the wooden inspection platforms, the building and of course, that class DMU.
heirflick
steven, f it were me, i would remove the wooden walkway, extend if possible the line to take a 4 car set and maybe do a refuling or cleaning area instead. not that what you have done isnt great, its just if that was mine......
BosKonay
Extending unfortunately isn't an option Seamus, as these two sidings are tucked in between the terminus throat and mainline... but I hear you on the walkway.... Maybe a small fueling / cleaning point would look better here... not sure there is anything with raised walkways in the prototype anyway... BosKonay
was inspired by this kinda thing Which is on the excellent Exeter St Andrews Layout
josefstadt
There is a similar setup with raised walkways in the 'Wicklow Sidings' in Bray. The walkways, made of steel, were put in to provide a safe walking route for drivers changing ends in the sidings (sorry no photo). There were also similar wooden walkways in the bay platform area in Dún Laoghaire before the area was redeveloped for the DART. These were used for cleaning coaching stock. The attached photo shows the area as DART works in the station waere just starting. The line serving the platform has been lifted and some of the coping stones have been removed. The light coloured area on the wall opposite the signal cabin was where the siding whent across Harbour Road and on to St Michael's Wharf. Personally, I'd keep the walkway on the layout.
