jhb171achill Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 (edited) I still find it hard to understand why Translink persist with applying the old NIR symbol to these three locos; NIR still exists as a legal entity, of course, but the entire railway has used the overall Translink brand as its sole publicity and marketing label since 1996 - that entity now, in itself, being into its third logo. The equivalent is CIE still putting a MGWR or GSWR crest on something on rails, well into the 1950s, or a Craven or 071 being painted in CIE green with a flying snail in 1987....... Galteemore Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 You say that like it’s a bad thing JHB….;) In all seriousness, I’d love to see a nod to Irish railway heritage by turning out the odd railcar set in GN livery etc…. Quote

Oh no, just curious! I'm all for retro stuff, as you might imagine! And yes, I'd love to see an NIR railcar in UTA green or GNR navy & cream; and an ICR or 201 in older CIE dark green, complete with pale green lining and "snails"................ DJ Dangerous Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 I think the 071's would look good in black with gold bands! 1 Quote

John-r Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Really looking good, great work Philip. Quote
murphaph Posted December 12, 2022 Author Posted December 12, 2022 Thanks chaps! Much appreciated Looking forward to completing these and getting on to weathering them up! Quote

These are destined for another member's collection. Starting point: After fabricating a chassis, adding the Silver Fox Werkspoor bogies, painting up, applying transfers, fabricating glazing out of a CD case and weathering appropriately (none of the pics I have found show them in an absolutely filthy state while they were in revenue service, so I haven't overdone it): I should have thanked @murphaph properly for these two beauties, but I'm just not that pleasant a person. These were hand-delivered, which just goes to show the level of dedication that @murphaph has to his craft, specially for anybody who knows geography... Lovely looking little vans... Just need some nice IRM Mk2 B/C coaches to run with them! 8 5 Quote
murphaph Posted December 16, 2022 Author Posted December 16, 2022 Detail being applied to the 111s in advance of another clear coating and then reassembly can begin before weathering starts. The detailing isn't random. It was inconsistent on the prototypes too. 10 5 Quote
Robert Shrives Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I guess 112 will get a smattering of IR parts in orange - roof fan cowl and window frames on cabsides? Good spot on 112 buffer mounts . I have an MIR one in the pile of part dones and really tempted to do a BR Railfreight grey . One thing I have noted but not listed was how the locos yellow panels morphed over time. IIRC apart from size corners varied being squared or rounded so did all three have same rounded small panels at the same time I wonder.. Brilliant work regardless, look forward to seeing the finished weathered locos. Robert 1 Quote
murphaph Posted December 16, 2022 Author Posted December 16, 2022 Cheers Robert, I will be aiming for this look for 112: That's before it was on long term loan to IE (which is when it seems to have started accumulating orange bits!) 8 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 Not my era for modelling but most definitely my era for memories - these look absolutely spot on Philip and that shade of blue is very very nice! Great work as always. 1 2 1 Quote
Popular Post murphaph Posted December 20, 2022 Author Popular Post Posted December 20, 2022 113 going back together first. I struggled trying to prevent light bleed. I don't know if the donor bled light too but I took this back apart a number of times to get it right. The trick is getting the black "electrical tape" light blockers in the correct position. All three of these will have a driver fitted at a random end. Marker light surrounds painted with a cocktail stick: The handrail holes all need to be opened out slightly to accept the handrails. I was hoping that wouldn't be necessary but ho-hum.... Driver happy at work despite having no legs: Once I have reassembled all three I will begin weathering them. 12 9 Quote
Georgeconna Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 You must be well delighted at those results! 1 Quote
connollystn Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 @murphaph - Very impressive job on those 111/8111s. Have to say that NIR livery and the Iarnród Éireann silver and black livery are my favourites - really suit that locomotive. Was glad that IÉ 086 hung 'round Connolly in that livery for ages. Probably was the last to be refurbished and painted in the current rail freight scheme. 1 Quote
DJ Dangerous Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 Just going through this thread on the computer now. Usually do so on the mobile, and I have to say, @murphaph's work is just mind-blowing. I didn't fully appreciate the quality of his workmanship while viewing the thread on the mobile, but seeing these pictures up close is something else. Absolutely outstanding work, these 111's have to be some of the best 071 re-sprays out there! 1 1 Quote
exciecoachbuilder Posted December 22, 2022 Posted December 22, 2022 It sure is outstanding work Phillip, well done. Like all your work, these locos look the business. Especially loved your Vic Berry resprays, just like they rolled out of the paint shop in Inchicore. Again, well done. Paul. 1 1 1 Quote
murphaph Posted December 22, 2022 Author Posted December 22, 2022 Thanks a lot for all the kind words folks. I had intended doing a full rake of Vic Berry coaches but well, IRM relieved me of that responsibility lol and sure it means I can do something else instead. I will still do the mk2a plated over centre door resprays as these are pretty unlikely in RTR for the foreseeable future. Here are 112 and 113 with handrails applied. The windscreen wipers go on after the weathering is complete. I am wondering whether the original chunky plastic ones or etched brass ones from SSM would be better to be honest.... 111 has decided to be less cooperative, somehow losing the top of one of the leds In the pic led3 should also have a yellow top like the other two warm white leds). I have ordered a warm white 0603 replacement led to fix it before it is reassembled: 7 1 Quote

Go for the etched brass ones as I've always felt that the original wipers were way too prominent. 2 Quote

murphaph Posted December 31, 2022 Author Posted December 31, 2022 (edited) So, a follow up to 111 and the sheared off LED3. Replacements arrived over Xmas and one was soldered in today. It's a pretty close match for the original, certainly to the naked eye it seems almost identical. I post the packaging here so if anyone is looking for replacements they can use this as a reference. Before: New 0603 SMD LEDs: After installation: Testing: The two outside LEDs should be closely matched. The centre one is for the headlight. Edited December 31, 2022 by murphaph 9 1 1 Quote

murphaph Posted January 3, 2023 Author Posted January 3, 2023 111s all put back together (bar the wipers which will go on at the very end) and first step in the weathering is a grubby enamel wash. I'll let this dry for a few days and clear coat probably, then maybe do some streaking. I don't think I'll go overboard on these. Mainly frame and roof dirt with a few stone chipped rust spots up front. NIR seemed to keep them a little cleaner than IE did at the time. 10 6 Quote

Robert Shrives Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Brilliant, even now capture the careworn look and the little variations between class members. The persistence with the logo has paid off with how the panel lines show. thanks for showing Robert 1 1 Quote
murphaph Posted January 3, 2023 Author Posted January 3, 2023 That's true Robert. I am positive that had I stuck with transfers for the large logos, this part of the operation would have highlighted the problem. By spraying the logos it's like the real thing and the dirt can get into all those nooks and crannies. Quote
