I received my Park Royals this morning. They look amazing, but I think I can see what's been causing derailments for others.

One of the brake lines on one end droops down and fouls the flange of one of the wheels:

This is a lot easier to see on the green coaches with the grey brake lines. The video shows the worst affected of my PRs, but all of them seem to have some level of contact with the wheel. This only happens at the end where the two lines cross over, the other end has enough clearance.

I have not actually experienced any derailments, but I could see this causing problems especially in combination with some iffy track.

I will be regauging mine so the wheels will be moved out, well away of these lines. But otherwise I reckon a drop of glue to stick the brake line to the underside of the floor might be the best solution.

The 16.5mm gauge OO track most people use is slightly under scale for standard gauge. It's actually really HO scale track that we use in OO. Some modellers in the UK use EM and/or P4 track and wheels which are more accurate to scale.

In Ireland the 'problem' is doubly bad since we use broad gauge track, so the scale accurate track gauge should be 21mm instead of 16.5mm. So some modellers (like me) who care too much about accuracy or just like the extra challenge will regauge stock to run on 21mm gauge track.

 

I'm sure you can find a few videos around the place on EM/P4 conversions (especially from UK modellers). It usually involves pulling the wheels out to the correct gauge, but depending on the model can require some more significant modifications. There are quite a few posts on this forum about people converting their stock too.

That's putting it mildly.

Seven scale inches too narrow for standard gauge. A whole 1ft 1½ins too narrow for Irish standard. And that's all due to decisions made, and the state of electric motor technology, in the 1930s...

Theh must be, as only seven went live, all black and orange variants.

I guess they were quite rare - 4 of the 16 variants are green, the rest black and orange.

I think I managed to snag the last no.1387... for once in my life I was proactive and pounced as soon as the email came in. Thank goodness that I signed up for the stock notifications! 

Interestingly that particular item has now reverted back to 'pre order' rather than out of stock.

Same. I would probably not buy any more twin stripe ones because let's be honest they were not formed into long trains of those at any stage. They were either on short branch line services or in amongst single stripe and or Cravens coaches. I doubt a full train of twin stripe Park Royals ever happened. What year were they actually banned from carrying passengers on the mainline?

I would definitely buy more green n grey era ones, ideally the mainline variants. I don't collect anything from the broken wheel era so the single stripe ones aren't for me.

They're a really nice coach and quintessentially Irish.

We're delighted with the Park Royals, even if we really had to cut the run to the bone, they've sold well. 

A new run would focus on the mainline variants.
