scahalane Posted March 2, 2014 Author Posted March 2, 2014 have to ask...did you plan this on paper or are you making it up as you go? Its all worked out on paper first using photo's, Google earth, and autocad. It would be very difficult to get the scale right on the fly. Quote
Kirley Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Just breath taking, you can just imagine the standard of the finished layout. Quote
Glenderg Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Just breath taking, you can just imagine the standard of the finished layout. Summed up my thoughts exactly kieran. I'm always trying to get a feel for the entire monster this layout is going to be, but Scahalane does such a nice job of teasing us with carefully poised shots! That inclined terrace is just one example. Really want to see whats up the hill. The quality of the modelling thus far suggests if you laid on busses to scahalanes gaff for a looksee, they'd be fully booked. [same for kirley junction too!] R. Quote
Mayner Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Beales hill is perfect.....love the leafy Walk up there!! Class stuff... G Used to be one of my favourite spots watching a B141 and a couple of laminates threading its way across from Glanmire Road onto the old Cork & Youghal formation. Really captures the atmosphere of the area. Quote
kevrail Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Just breath taking, you can just imagine the standard of the finished layout. I am losing my breath. Kirley junction and now this. Lads there is a serious amount of talent and skills on this forum. I take my hat of to you lads Quote

scahalane Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 (edited) Thanks guys for all the kind remarks its much appreciated. I haven't ventured up into the attic since April due to work commitments and an adverse reaction to slogging it out in a dark roof space while the sun shines outside. As Autumn approaches I hope to rectify that in the mean time here's a few shots I took with my phone cam last April, sorry about the quality. When last up there I got a start into building up the landscape with a cliff face embankments and cuttings. I used blue foam for the cliff face shaping it with a knife and building up the colour with layers of paint washes. I followed this guys tutorial on how to do it and after a bit of trial and error I was quite pleased with the results. Check out his video here: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/9227 The embankments are just plaster bandages painted at the moment but eventually they'll have a good coverage of static grass. BosKonay Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Quite simply a museum grade work of art! Jaw droppingly inspirational! Quote
Glenderg Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 First time I've seen that insulating foam used to most convincing effect, outstanding Sca. (p.s. which corkmans face you going to carve into that Mount Rushmore patch in the first photo? Keano? JBM? ) Quote
scahalane Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 (p.s. which corkmans face you going to carve into that Mount Rushmore patch in the first photo? Keano? JBM? ) Have to agree it was a little over flamboyant to begin with so maybe Graham Norton? Quote
burnthebox Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Bloody hell, who's the Contractor on this, McAlpine, fantastic, just fantastic, Quote
rebelred Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 The biggest compliment I can give you is its exactly the view I get from the Cab when driving over Waterstreet Bridge towards Myrtlehill Crossing, Stunning!!! Quote

Weshty Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Superb stuff, it really captures the essence of all points south of Glanmire Station. And full scale too in what could have been a limited attic space. I take it there's going to be a CDC GIN advert on the bridge? Dowtcha boy! Quote
Noel Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 I've only recently discovered this forum and wow yet another superb project and layout. Hat's off - respect. Quote
scahalane Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 (edited) Slow progress but another bit done. Managed to finish the workshop building. The walls are made from photo's turned into textures then printed and glued onto card. The windows and doors etc are made from plastic card as are the roof tiles. The corrugated roof is made from pressed tin foil. I thought I'd through in a few photo's of how it looked in 1990, the era I'm basing it on compared to how it looks today.
