Irishswissernie
West Clare Rly, 3 November 1960, Ennis F503 on a wet day, note the cattle wagon at the head of the train. 2 views at Newry Edward Street 24 August 1962. Note on the second view the reference to the Greenore bus service which replaced the old D&NGR trains and also mention of the long gone service to Armagh.

Mike 84C
On the WR it had an r in it as in prep pipe. For loco preparation, have heard it called the dagger pipe by several ex GC/LNE men. Wonder if there is a special CIE name for it?
Irishswissernie
Yes I should have realised that; although up here in the ancestral home of the railway back in the last century I can't remember seeing one left dangling over the cab side. 1
jhb171achill
Re. the shot of B113, I never noticed the Sulzer makers plate beside the cab door before. Also, looks like that loco has got a wallop of some sort!
Irishswissernie
3 'Posers' for you today. They are all 12/13 April 1968 and the spoil train and probably the railcar are on the Larne line. The station is probably in that area too. Locations anyone?
LARNE CABIN
I would say the spoil train is on the Magheramorne side of Ballycarry Station. The 70 Class looks as though it's on the Whitehead side of Ballycarry Station. The station therefore may be Ballycarry, but I don't recognise it as such. I stand to be corrected by more knowledgeable experts!

leslie10646
The top photo is at one end of Old Mill Bay, I think it's the Magheramorne end with a loaded train. If I've compared photos correctly, this is the rear engine and he's not exerting himself! The photographer seems to be standing on the East side of the line. The line was crossed by the electricity lines from Ballylumford Power Station. One of the giant pylons is clearly visible in your photo. Lance King took a lot of shots in this area (from the West side, which seems to have given him better light), but while he had the signal in the photo and the actual wires, he managed to keep the pylon out of the shot! 1
LARNE CABIN
Hi Leslie, just looked up Old Mill Bay on map, so agree with you, but surely the bracket signal is 'off', so surely that is the lead engine and the train is about to pass under the bridge into Ballycarry Station!

The middle photo here is Fahan on the Lough Swilly, quite a bit west of Ballycarry! The photographer is standing on the former trackbed and behind is a stone overbridge. The station building is now a pub/restaurant.

That's quite a mixed train - there are three railcar trailers forming the passenger section, and then another van and cattle wagon behind those. Note also the platform lattice signal post which has long been reused to carry telegraph/telephone cables.

Irishswissernie
Working through some more closed station views today. These 5 are all ex Cavan & Leitrim Railway 19 April 1968. First one Ballinamore; this had me puzzled for a while as post closure the owner had moved a door and also bricked in the glazed area. All to no avail as I think this may now under the bypass. Next Drumshanbo where the bypass now runs along the trackbed but most of the buildings including the water tower are still there. The washing line however is probably another 'fatality'. Next is a former road crossing, I think this is on the Arigna Extension as there are gate posts on the railway. Probably the R285 road and the cottage is buried in the undergrowth on Google Earth. EDIT The cottage is Arigna station with the extension to the mines crossing the road; thanks Andy! The last two are Dromod and I think Kiltubrid. Andy Cundick
Its not the Arigna extension it is fact Arigna the line crossing is the extension to the mines the building being Arigna station building, been modelled that,Andy. 2

J15 130 was one of the last steam locos on CIE's books, only OFFICIALLY withdrawn in 1965, though no steam locos at all operated* after March 1963, including 130. (*Other than as stationary boilers). Galteemore
Rowledge lists a number of 0-6-0s as being in CIE stock until 1965, some of which may have been boilers. Generally speaking, I suspect that there would have been little demand for such things post-steam : the stationary boiler was largely an adjunct to steam operations, facilitating such matters as boiler washouts, tube cleaning etc. Edited September 30, 2022 by Galteemore
