NIR HUNSLET 101 EAGLE

This is my Silver fox model of the NIR Hunslet loco 101 EAGLE.

It started with the resin body and then I used a Lima 20 class chassis for the power.

The Lima chassis was old and only had pickup to one bogie so I managed to get pickups

to the other bogie and that helped a lot on the frogs on points.

Blue paint was mixed from 2 Humbrol colours M68 & G52.

The red/orange stripes were hand painted with more red than orange

Hand rails, wipers and foot steps on the front were hand made.

I tried to give it a heavy weathered look but didn't want to over do it.

I will start with a photo by J & J Cottrell that they sent to me of the loco at Adelaide

which was a big help, and thanks to them for their help.

Agreed, anyone anticipating an NIR mk2 should get a kit/rtr hunslet.

Kinda expecting Hunslets to be announced at some stage. You got the coaches coming out, The engines have a couple of liveries so would fit the IRM MO I expect.

so a quick look reveals 6 at least x 3 is 18 locos!!

Fair enough, I would have thaught with the only 3 in service. It would have had to wait a while for its turn 

 

(granted there were only 3 800 class locos too, and I’d hope as much as anyone else they will get RTR representation)

Just to clarify one point, often possibly misunderstood:

The maroon livery only had the one type of logo - models have appeared in many places with yellow transfers on them which are wrong. The logo was the original upright NIR one, which was fold with white lining around it - the same transfer that they put on the sides of carriages and railcars - and three WT class steam engines!

In maroon livery they never had yellow logos of any sort, lined or otherwise, or of any size. The blue livery appeared with the new "slanted" logo - the slanted version was never on any maroon engine.

Nothing on NIR ever had a yellow logo in any livery.

I guess it is good to dream of an rtr version, I now have 3 working to completion , maroon, blue small logo NIR and blue yellow ends black roof, large logo NIR.   These all on Bachmann class 20 chassis so quiet and powerful - unlike the real things.  

Hopefully as a missing link in NIR evolution along with MK2B coaches in blue and Maroon  they will find favour at IRM Towers.

Very distinctive sound - I remember them brand new and they had a sort of high-pitched "whistling" sound - very different indeed to the hoarse sore-throat sound of an AEC or MED railcar which surrounded them on local services.........

LINESIDE BUILDINGS ETC.

I have been working on some items that you would see along the sides of the railway and in rail yards.

this is the first one I have done.

It is called REB which stands for Relocatable Equipment Building with the AWS relay box all made with

plastic sheet and the Telecom tower is part kit and part made by me.

it's surprising how many of these are around when you start looking.

Plus 3 vans with IE logo's from Railtec.

Oh very nice work. Really looks the part. Are the transits prototypical for 1995 or are the later or freelance? I have looked for pics of similar but only ever found plain blue and red transits. Be cool if these existed in reality.

There are more bits and pieces to come when I get them finished.

I'm not to bothered about dates for vehicles or rolling stock, if I like it it's in.

The MK3 BR Transit van is easier to do as there is less writing on it to remove.

They come up on eBay sometimes, so keep checking.

NIR ENGLISH ELECTRIC 060 SHUNTER N01.

This is my build of the NIR shunter No1.

I first had to get the motor chassis from a 04 shunter and then build the body to fit around that.

Thanks to Kirley for his help with measurements and photo's.

Brilliant work in every way, I had asked Mike Edge if he would consider a brass kit but reply was well down his list. This is sublime modelling and I wish I was half as good !

I wouldn't do a second one because of the time involved and I need to move on with the very long

list of projects in front of me.

The EE shunter is an excellent example of what can be achieved by scratchbuilding in plasticard.

GN Hoppers, cut-down open wagons and bogie bolster really capture the neglected run-down nature of NIR engineers stock during the 70s and 80s.

Any chance of an MPD railcar for light shunting/off peak passenger services.

I really thought the pictures of the loco before painting were of resin castings. The quality of finish is brilliant, no marks or lines . Wish I had the patience to get such a finish, I'm a bit of a good enough sort of person!
