New Accurascale Exclusive Announcement! The Irish Deltic!

02.jpg.c41f513302492239522a97dda6a5b3c7.jpg

We are delighted to announce a new addition to our Class 55 Deltic range, the little known Irish Deltic! After English Electric delivered the 22 production Deltics to British Railways, CIE, the Irish transport authority, contacted English Electric with a view to converting the design to 5ft 3 gauge for evaluation purposes.

English Electric duly obliged and D3333 was delivered to Dublin a year later, resplendent in the CIE black and tan livery. In honour of the class and their association with famous horses, CIE named the locomotive after the most famous horse in the land.

The locomotive was duly tested on services to the west of Ireland, including the famous 'Craggy Island Express', which is faithfully replicated on our model with appropriate headcode display.

Very few photos of this locomotive survive, but we are delighted to offer it in OO gauge form as part of our Accurascale exclusives range. Price for DCC sound is £333.33 and is strictly limited to 333 pieces. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our Chinese factory for getting this sample to us, which we further cobbled together from parts. The Chinese; A great bunch of lads.

LOL!...... Brilliant!

Railway Magazine used to do an occasional 'April' story. One memorable one was just after the privatization of Railtrack. The story was that CIE were going to introduce a London-Galway (via Dublin) through service using 5' 3" gauge trains between the two places and a new train ferry to carry the trains between Dublin to Holyhead. At a press briefing the CIE spokesman was asked how was the 5' 3" gauge trains would be able to run between Holyhead and London given the track gauge of 4' 8 1/2". "No problem" said the spokesman. "Under the terms of the new Railtrack operation, THEY HAVE TO PROVIDE THE INFRASTRUCTURE for the operator using the route. Railtrack will just have to lay a third rail between Holyhead and London for our trains."

If they had run the ferry to Portsmouth, they could, subject to a small amount of work, have used the (de-energised!) 'third rail' on the Southern Region electrified track up to London. The trains would have leaned a little bit, but that would have allowed a slightly higher speed on half the turns.

When I was involved with the Downs of Patrick, one 1st April we put the word about that a fish had been found in the water tower, blocking the outlet, and this had been noticed by the fireman who noticed a much reduced flow when he was watering No. 3 prior to a day's shunting or something.

Investigation found the fish, which it was reckoned had been dropped by a heron flying overhead which had dropped it, having caught it in the River Quoile moments earlier....!

The number of people who believed it would astound you.......

Then there was the new livery for E421.....

Did the Go-Faster stripes make E421 run any faster, or did it break down before a GPS could register a speed?

It got to Warp 10.7 near the North Junction...... it was being filmed from the air by the Concorde, but it left the aeroplane behind..... that's why there are no pics of it with its 18-bogie load.

How about the proposed 4,400hp 'Super' Deltic in a highly appropriate 'Super' train livery? ;)
