I'll let this dry for a few days and clear coat probably, then maybe do some streaking. I don't think I'll go overboard on these. Mainly frame and roof dirt with a few stone chipped rust spots up front. NIR seemed to keep them a little cleaner than IE did at the time. Beautiful work!! Extra commissions on the way i think!! Im first in the que!! 1 Quote
murphaph Posted January 7, 2023 Author Posted January 7, 2023 First attempt at weathering a steam loco (kindly donated to science by @DJ Dangerous). As this loco never actually existed in Ireland anyway I felt happy enough to just use some random tank engine pics for inspiration, mainly a couple of Southern ones that showed the water splashes after the loco had taken on water recently. Also the ash streaking or whatever it is that streaks down from the funnel was evident. Another loco had streaking from the whistle, presumably limescale deposits? I have no idea really. I am actually pretty satisfied with the result. It will someday be hauling Genesis coaches in sunnier climes 14 2 Quote

connollystn Posted January 17, 2023 Posted January 17, 2023 @murphaph - Those 8111s look great. It's fantastic what the right amount of weathering can do for models. 3 1 Quote

And yes, the whitish deposit often found was indeed limescale. 2 1 Quote

murphaph Posted January 20, 2023 Author Posted January 20, 2023 Yeah except with the addition of roof grime and soot. Otherwise I think the same. 2 Quote

Popular Post murphaph Posted January 23, 2023 Author Popular Post Posted January 23, 2023 Right, this is the final update on these 111s. They are "finished" now after I applied the glossy touches to the oily/greasy bits like the wheel bearing journals, fuel tanks, exhaust ports etc. Nameplates will someday be applied whenever Steve at Railtec has made them available. Should be trivial to apply them and weather lightly then. I didn't want to leave them in a million pieces waiting for them to arrive. This has been my most ambitious respray with a number of false starts and dead ends. I probably stripped these locos back to plastic three times, including after having applied the transfers as I was so unsatisfied with the large logo as a transfer. That sent me down the path of laser cutting out masks and I learned a bit from that too. In the end though I am really pleased with how they've turned out. 19 11 Quote

murphaph Posted March 1, 2023 Author Posted March 1, 2023 A sad tale today. I am currently trying to piece an 048 back together after a fall from height. The fall was so bad it resulted in a bent chassis. This is one of @DJ Dangerous locos, not mine. The damage is extensive, the bogies themselves left hanging by their pickup wires, a crack in the body and some paint damage, missing wiper blade which was not recovered, cracked bogie frame, radiator grilles popped out, windscreens smashed in and both horns sheared off to boot. She will be patched up as best as possible and sent on her way to Tenerife when I'm done, hopefully running at least, even if not in perfect cosmetic order . 2 4 1 Quote
